Birch is a very light coloured wood with shades of beige and very pale pink. It makes a change from the much darker brown hues of most woods used for knife handles. Birch trees are eternal travellers, never occupying the same spot for long because they can neither sprout nor grow and thrive in the shade of their peers. The wind therefore does Mother Nature's work, disseminating their seed far and wide so the second generation will grow several kilometres from the first.
